05 zero energy mews

brief: To convert a derelict mews property (single aspect building) into a zero energy housee.

site: Park Gardens Lane is historically the home for servants and also the stables for the wealthy living in Park Gardens. The building currently lies derelict with its south facing facade in poor condition.

design: A box within a box- two climate zones, one for occasional use, the other for the majority of living. An offset internal structure allows maximum penetration of natural light to all spaces in this single aspect site. The heat recycling system uses filtered heat produced by cooking, washing, etc as additional heat for the building. The main service core, which contains the stairs, carries all pipes and wiring to upper floors allowing for adaptable space planning to permit for change in the buildings use through time. The fully glazed south facing facade has full height shutters for shade during the day, heat retention during the evening and privacy when required.
